It is with great pride that we share with you the news that Hungarian set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos wore Daalarna last night when she won an Oscar for Best Production Design for her work in Dune. We managed to catch Zsuzsi for a short interview two days before the Oscars as our fingers were still crossed for her winning the golden statuette after her BAFTA success.
What was it like working on the Dune movie?
Zsuzsanna Sipos: Working on Dune was a great experience. We have an amazingly talented cast, including our own crew. I am honoured to have been one of them.
Do you have any memorable experiences from the shoot?
Funny things happened every day. Basically, it was a very fun shoot, one of the best I’ve ever been on. I can’t really pick out one experience.
What do you like most about your job?
The fact that my job is both my hobby and my passion. Of course, there are some parts of it that I’m less passionate about, for example, I don’t like dealing with the financial side, budgets, and presentations.
How is your week going in Los Angeles?
So far it’s going very well. My best friend, Zsófi, is here with me. We’re sightseeing, trying out great food and drinks. The weather is really nice.
What are some of the must-see events or parties you’re attending regarding the Oscars?
There are a lot of obligatory appearances, but most of them were cancelled, unfortunately. I went to the candidates’ dinner on Tuesday. It wasn’t like it was before Covid came out because only candidates in two categories were invited and many didn’t show up. Previously it was a dinner with a larger guest list. Unfortunately, after BAFTA, many people caught the virus, even though everyone had been tested several times, so everyone is very careful. They’re not taking any chances.
How did you find Daalarna and why did you decide to ask us to design your Oscar gown?
I have been following Anita Benes’ work for a long time. She has beautiful creations. As soon as the nomination came out, she was one of the first designers I thought of. I was sure I wanted to wear a dress by a Hungarian designer at the Oscars. We have many talented people in Hungary.
Why did you choose this dress?
It was love at first sight.
How did you feel during the fitting process?
Basically very well, although it was strange for me to see so much care and attention directed at me. My family and friends keep telling me that I have to get used to this for a while now, because people are curious and proud of what we have achieved. I use plural because I couldn’t have done it on my own. I have a great team behind me!
Have you written your speech in advance in case you win?
Not yet. Maybe I’ll write something soon, although I don’t have much time until the event.
